We need more than just regulation to oust dodgy operators in the electrification market
26 November 2024

While home electrification is a massive opportunity for every Australian household, mass uptake could be in jeopardy if we fall foul of dodgy operators.
The reputational risks for the industry are alive and well (as Angela Macdonald-Smith’s AFR article points out) when State and Federal Governments move to subsidise battery storage, heat pumps, heating and cooling, and more. So what do we do about it?
Of course, regulation is key, but we have to do more to see that households receive a high-quality experience, with high-quality products, sized appropriately and optimally for their home.
It’s true that householders “choose brands and sizing based on the information presented to them over the kitchen table” – so we need to ensure that the installer/supplier is trustworthy, and is selling products that not only have regulatory approval but are of the highest possible quality and are fundamentally fit-for-purpose based on how that household works.
We need to ensure that the installer/supplier is trustworthy, and is selling products that not only have regulatory approval but are of the highest possible quality and are fundamentally fit-for-purpose based on how that household works.
Government bodies like Solar Victoria have completed useful work on this topic, and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation is also ramping things up with requirements for its Home Energy Upgrade Finance. However, at BOOM! Power we’re working hard to go much further – a supplier found through our platform can be trusted, and their claims quickly and easily checked.
We undertake significant due diligence on every supplier made available via the BOOM! Power Platform, whether they’re local or national. The platform provides households with insights into what’s optimal for their home, based on detailed and sophisticated modeling of their current energy usage, leveraging trusted methodologies from the CSIRO and other bodies.
Every product purchased via our platform has automated regulatory checks, confirming the product is approved by the Clean Energy Council, the electrician is listed with Solar Accreditation Australia and the supplier is certified under the New Energy Tech Consumer Code.
By the time a householder sits down with a supplier they know the costs and benefits of installing solar and batteries, what buying an electric vehicle will do to their solar payback period, or how installing an induction cooktop or hot water heat pump will increase their prosperity. They’ll have a long-term plan based on their individual needs, and a viable path to paying for it.
Coupling this approach with reputable brands that consumers trust – ING Australia, Bank Australia, Actew AGL to name a few – BOOM! Power is well and truly leading the charge for the consumer.
Australia has a massive, once-in-a-generation opportunity to permanently decarbonise households, reduce our cost of living, build trust across our community, and create resilient energy infrastructure. We’re determined to keep consumers at the heart of the transition. If you feel the same, it’s time to get in touch!
